Edition originale. Tous deux liés aux Nabis, James Pitcairn-Knowles et Joseph Rippl-Rónai conçoivent les illustrations ensemble à la demande du galeriste Bing. Le premier décline le thème de la mort en trois bois sombres, le second célèbre la vie et l’été à travers 4 lithographies colorées. Ce n'est qu'une fois les gravures réalisées que Bing demande à Georges Rodenbach d'écrire un texte pour les illustrer, produisant ainsi un livre d'artiste où l'image n’est pas subordonnée à l’écrit. 2 vol. in-8 (250 x 170 mm) brochés. Illustré de 3 xylographies noires par James Pitcairn-Knowles (les Tombeaux) et de 4 lithographies en couleurs par Joseph Rippl-Rónai (les Vierges). Jaquettes illustrées de bois gravés de Pitcairn-Knowles. Chemise et étui modernes (quelques manques sur les dos des deux volumes brochés).

First edition. James Pitcairn-Knowles and Joseph Rippl-Rónai, both linked to Nabis, conceived the illustrations together on the request of the gallerist Bing. The first one declines the theme of Death in three dark xylographs, the second one celebrates Life and Summer through 4 colourful lithographs. It was only once the prints were made that Bing asked George Rodenbach to write a text to illustrate them, producing a livre d’artiste in which the image is not subordinated to the writing. 2 in-8 paperback volumes (250 x 170 mm). Illustrated with 3 black xylographs by James Pitcairn-Knowles (les Tombeaux) and 4 colourful lithographs by Joseph Rippl-Rónai (les Vierges). Dustjackets illustrated with xylographs by Pitcairn-Knowles. Modern slipcase and case (several losses on the spine of the two volumes).
