First edition. James Pitcairn-Knowles and Joseph Rippl-Rónai, both linked to Nabis, conceived the illustrations together on the request of the gallerist Bing. The first one declines the theme of Death in three dark xylographs, the second one celebrates Life and Summer through 4 colourful lithographs. It was only once the prints were made that Bing asked George Rodenbach to write a text to illustrate them, producing a livre d’artiste in which the image is not subordinated to the writing. From Manet to Hockney, 12.
