A metà degli anni Cinquanta lo scultore italiano Ettore Colla si allontana dallo stile figurativo che aveva connotato il suo lavoro fino alla Seconda guerra mondiale e inzia a realizzare sculture astratte con materiali di recupero, in primis ferro. Opere come Scultura con cerchio evidenziano la pratica artistica post-bellica di Colla, mettendo in luce le raffinate e ridotte composizioni geometriche che hanno caratterizzato il suo lavoro di quest’epoca. Colla modella i pezzi di ferro riciclato che trova con il fine di renderli conformi a uno schema scultoreo attentamente pianificato. Integrando all’interno del perimetro scultoreo lo spazio vuoto, Scultura con cerchio è un’opera monumentale e stranamente enigmatica al tempo stesso, tanto da apparire come una reliquia totemica di un’altra epoca. Le forme elementari della composizione – il cerchio e la linea verticale –donano a quest’opera un potere fortemente simbolico.
In the middle of the 1950s the Italian sculptor Ettore Colla turned away from the figurative style he had been working in up until the Second World War and began to create abstract sculpture made from salvaged materials, primarily iron. Works such as Scultura con cerchio encapsulate Colla’s post-war practice, demonstrating the refined and reduced geometric compositions that have come to define his work of this era. Colla shaped the pieces of recycled iron that he found so that they conformed to a carefully planned sculptural scheme. Integrating empty space into the sculpture itself, Scultura con cerchio is at once monumental and strangely enigmatic, appearing like a totemic relic from another epoch; the elemental forms of its composition – the circle and vertical line – lending this work a symbolic power.
