Carps

Born in Guangzhou in 1948, Chen Yongqiang graduated from the School of Traditional Chinese Painting at the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, and currently serves as a Visiting Professor at the school. The alluring layered colours in Carps prompt the viewer to explore the painting’s spectrum, while the short, scattered strokes remind one of rippling water. In depicting the fish’s varied bearings and leisurely swim, the solid brushstrokes and soft touches brilliantly capture lively movement and pleasant repose. Chen’s refined treatment of both the subject and the background of the painting evinces his artistry and virtuosity.
