Cai Ruohong was a native of Jiujiang, Jiangxi. He was one of the founders of the New China Fine Art movement, a famous artist, and he graduated from the Western Painting Department of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in 1931. Cai later joined the Chinese Left-wing Artists Union and engaged in comic illustration in Shanghai. After 1949, he served as an art editor of People’s Daily, deputy director of the Art Bureau of the Ministry of Culture, and vice president of the Chinese Painting Research Institute.
