《躬身的饮酒者》为格奥尔格·巴泽利茨标志性系列「饮酒者」(Trinker) 中最大尺幅作品之壹。炽热而又震慑心灵的图景在两米半高的画幅中铺展开来。艺术家采用上下颠倒的经典形式，画面中的主人公躬身伏在桌面上，将湖水般澄澈的眼眸投入手中的瓶子。浓稠、色泽艳丽的颜料贴着画布，从顶部层层叠叠地流下，模糊了这壹人物的边缘，从而使其的形态更为抽象。此作品完成于1982年，捕捉了巴泽利茨笔触最为激进、热烈的时期。来年便进入了私人收藏，直至今日才再次出现在市场。伴随皇家艺术学院(Royal Academy) 于1981年为其举办的里程碑式的展览「A New Spirit in Painting」，艺术家在国际舞台上获得了壹席之地，并于同年分别亮相于第七届卡塞尔文献展（Documenta 7）和由柏林马丁-格罗皮乌斯博物馆(Martin-Gropius-Bau) 举办的传奇展览「Zeitgeist」。从爱德华·蒙克(Edvard Munch) 与埃贡·席勒(Egon Schiele) 到威廉·德·库宁(Willem de Kooning) 和弗朗兹·克莱恩(Franz Kline)，这件作品融合了表现主义和抽象表现主义先驱们的成就，亦见证了艺术家极富生命力艺术语言的突破。「饮酒者」与其另一件为人称道的作品《吃橙子的人们》(Orangenesser /Orange Eaters) 被视为巴泽利茨创作中最具有生动表现力的绘画，类似的作品可见于汉诺威史宾格美术馆（Sprengel Museum Hannover）和斯图加特国立美术馆（Staatsgalerie Stuttgart）。这件作品亦曾在1983年展出于阿克伦艺术博物馆（Akron Art Museum）和白教堂画廊（Whitechapel Gallery）举办的艺术家回顾展，可谓是艺术家跻身于国际新表现主义前沿的真切印证。
