1963年，毕加索结束了近十年对从委拉斯奎兹、德拉克罗瓦、马奈到普桑等过去大师艺术的探索诠释，将主题转向了与艺术创作更紧密相连的基本，即画家与模特之间密切而神秘的关系。该系列作品之一的本幅《画家与他的模特》，曾是毕加索妻子杰奎琳·洛克旧藏，之后由女儿凯瑟琳·于坦—布莱继承。画家与模特的系列创作从1963年2月开始，在1965年3月完成最后一组作品达至高峰。本幅作于1964年11月15日，是秋天所作的系列组画之一，该组作品有竖向或横向的构图，但大部分作于大尺幅的画布。色调柔和，淡绿色和粉色或淡紫色构成微妙的对比，仿佛作画时地中海冬季银白的光线透过窗户洒进了画室。在柔和的颜色上，毕加索用一系列黑色线条描绘出男性画家与裸女的基本特征，犹如密码电文般的线条和形状组合，勾勒出他们的脸部和身体。
