Hendricus Petrus Bremmer (1871-1956) fut l'une des figures les plus influentes du monde de l'art néerlandais durant la première moitié du XXe siècle : en témoignent non seulement la richesse de sa collection personnelle, mais aussi sa contribution à différentes collections publiques et privées des Pays-Bas. Grâce à son approche originale, ses écrits et ses discours sur l'appréciation de l'art, il initia un large public à l'art moderne. Bremmer sut éveiller l'enthousiasme de ses interlocuteurs, et en encouragea même certains à devenir collectionneurs à leur tour. Dans ce domaine, son élève la plus brillante fut sans aucun doute Mme Hélène Kröller-Müller. En 1909, elle acquit sur les conseils de Bremmer ses trois premiers tableaux de Vincent van Gogh. À terme, leur fructueuse collaboration mena à la création de l'une des plus importantes collections privées d'art moderne des Pays-Bas. Elle constitue aujourd'hui le cœur du musée Kröller-Müller, à Otterlo, fort de quelque 245 peintures et dessins de van Gogh.
Hendricus Petrus Bremmer (1871-1956) was one of the most influential figures in the Dutch art world during the first half of the twentieth century, which is reflected in many Dutch public and private collections as well as in his own collection. Through his unconventional approach, lectures about art-appreciation and numerous publications, he succeeded in winning a large audience for modern art. Not only was he able to arise enthusiasm among his audience for art, but he also stimulated them to start collecting themselves. His most successful pupil in this field was, without a doubt, Mrs. Hélène Kröller-Müller. In 1909, under Bremmer’s guidance, she bought her first three paintings by Van Gogh. Their alliance resulted in one of the largest private Dutch collections of modern art, which now forms the core of the Kröller-Müller museum in Otterlo, comprising today of around 245 paintings and drawings by Vincent van Gogh.
