The Buhl-Mann Diamond was originally owned and elegantly worn by New York socialite and philanthropist Lydia Buhl Mann. Born in Grosse Point, Michigan, Mrs. Mann was the granddaughter of Detroit businessman Louis Mendelssohn. Mrs. Mann was a well-admired debutante and appeared on the cover of Life during her debut season. She was praised for her elegance and style and appeared on best-dressed lists throughout her lifetime.

Mrs. Mann supported numerous charities in New York City, Palm Beach and Southampton. She was especially passionate about gardening and served on the board of numerous garden clubs and preservation committees. As a grandmother, Mrs. Mann ensured that children also enjoyed these public spaces. In New York, Mrs. Mann founded the Iroquois Avenue Foundation, which supported a wide range of initiatives. Mrs. Mann passed away on 10 December 1997. Lot 120 was acquired by the current owner at auction in 1998.
