The present work is one of four paintings from Fairfield Porter's Monument Mountain series, painted from the country home of James and Patricia Deely known as Ingleside in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. On commission to paint Mr. Deely's portrait, Porter spent a spring weekend with the couple at Ingleside where he produced the series, after which Mrs. Deely immediately acquired the present work.
