Born in 1957 in Hong Kong, Chui finished his training in medicine in the 1980s. He has a keen interest in various visual and performing arts. Since 2013, he studied Chinese and contemporary painting under Chui Tsz-hung. His work has been exhibited in Hong Kong and Mainland China.
Having lived in Hong Kong, a city where east meets west, for more than six decades, Chui's work is his personal manifesto of his interpretation of the fusion of both. He loves to use traditional Chinese rice paper because of its natural Oriental flavour. They are versatile, though fragile. The interaction between different colour mediums and paper can produce visual impressions of poetic elegance or fiery intricacies. He has also painted on other materials such as non-woven fabric and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) wrap mounted on styrofoam. Using Chinese and western ink, acrylic, pastel, and paint spray, Chui creates abstract works ranging from monochromic, dichromic, minimalistic to dynamic, colourful presentations with deliberate or spontaneous colours, lines, shapes, textures, overlays, and lustres. Chui wishes that his work could evoke savouring emotions in the viewers, adding colour to their lives' palette.
In Stillness and Motion captures the moment when a storm of flying colours suddenly stands still. Time stops. Emotions arising from life events can be mixed and chaotic. Emotions can be frozen. The rich, dense and dynamic colours at the centre are dialoguing with the more subtle and quiescent colours on both sides. They have their own story to tell. This work illustrates Chui’s impressions and expressions of east-west fusion.
