These two large and impressive oval engravings are part of a series of four prints of Heroes and Heroines from the Old Testament. The first two subjects are Jahel and Samson and only those two bear the monogram of Hendrick Goltzius as the inventor of these compositions. All four are very rare: New Hollstein only records impressions in Amsterdam, Brussels, Coburg, Paris and Vienna.
A red chalk drawing of David with the Head of Goliath (Marianne and Frank Seger Collection, Toronto) has been attributed to Hendrick Goltzius and dated around 1589. This closely related drawing is of very similar dimensions as the print and has been incised for transfer. It is highly likely that it served as the preparatory drawing for the present print of David. It is the only known drawing by Goltzius relating directly to this series of prints by his pupil Nicolaas Braeu, yet we can assume that he designed all four subjects and that the other drawings are lost or have so far remained unidentified.
