This artwork will be included in the Kodner Gallery Research Project for the artist, Charles (Carl) Wimar 1828-1862.
Most likely inspired by a popular print from the period and painted before the artist immigrated from Germany, the present work depicts the European equivalent of an American Indian marauder and indicates the artist's early interest in the romantic and unconvential aspects of life that would later be revealed in his depictions of Native Americans and the American West.
