Frederick MacMonnies originally created an approximately 80 inch high version of Young Faun with Heron as a commission for Joseph H. Choate's estate in Stockbridge, Massachusetts known as Naumkeag. The sculpture became the artist's first to win prizes in both America and Europe. As a result, the artist produced bronze reductions cast by both Gruet in Paris and Roman Bronze Works in New York.
