HAWKESWORTH, John (c.1715-1773).
An Account of the Voyages undertaken by the Order of His Present Majesty for making Discoveries in the Southern Hemisphere. London: W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1773.
First edition of the official account of Cook’s first voyage, with the map of the Straits of Magellan. Hawkesworth was commissioned by the Admiralty to prepare this collection of maritime reports, which includes Captain Byron’s voyage on the Dolphin as well as Cook’s first scientific mission to the South Seas. This volume “ensured Hawkesworth’s position in maritime literary history, as the official chronicler of Cook’s first voyage” (Hill). The original purpose of the trip was to observe the transit of Venus from Tahiti; the discoveries made on the voyage were so successful that Cook was promoted and assigned a further series of now-famous voyages of discovery. Hill 782.
3 volumes, quarto (295 x 234mm). 52 engraved plates, maps and views including map of the Straits of Magellan, of which most double-page and some folding (map of New South Wales in vol. III partially split along fold, tear into text of 4Z2 in vol. III). Contemporary polished calf, spines gilt (slightly rubbed, joints of vols. I and II starting, vol. III rebacked and recornered to style). Provenance: John Watlington Perry-Watlington (British politician, 1823-1882: bookplate and inscription).
