Atlas Contractus, sive Mapparum Geographicarum Sansoniarum auctarum et correctarum Nova Congeries. Amsterdam: [c.1708].
Very rare atlas of maps relating to Great Britain and Ireland, with fine contemporary colour. The publishing house of Schenk and Valck reused the maps from Janssonius' Novus Atlas, substituting their names in the maps' imprints. Koeman (III, p.111-114) gives a list of 471 terrestrial and 29 celestial maps as advertised by Schenk and Valk, and published using the title Atlas Contractus, although it it sometimes known as the Atlas Minor. The present atlas contains 60 of the maps as listed in the advertisement, all relating to the British Isles, together with Janssonius' map 'A general plott and description of the Fennes', originally published c.1659, again with his name erased and replaced by those of Schenk and Valck. The atlas is effectively Janssonius' Brittannia Magna Illustrata, the volume relating to the British Isles from the Novus Atlas, but using the Atlas Contractus engraved allegorical title, in the top margin of which a title has been added in contemporary ink manuscript: 'BRITTANNIA / Anglia . Scotia . Hibernia' followed by pen trial. The collection contains two dated dated maps, that of Great Britain being 1706, and that of Scotland 1708. Cf. Koeman III Sche 1; Van der Krogt I, 1:405.4V and 1:940.

Folio (532 x 307mm). Engraved allegorical title and 61 double-page maps, all coloured by a contemporary hand (or after Schenk, Sanson, Valk and others, contemporary hand colour (title mounted on a stub that just covers the extreme lower left-hand side of the engraving, title and two other maps with short splits in engraved area near gutter without loss, occasional faint browning slight more affecting the maps towards end, tink marginal nick to map of Ireland). Recent red morocco, black morocco gilt lettering piece to upper cover, contained in a matching red cloth box. Provenance: top margin of title inscribed in ink manuscript followed by pen trial in a contemporary hand.
