Figure majeure de l’art d’après-guerre en Californie, Wallace Berman est considéré comme l’un des fondateurs de l’assemblage. Connu pour son utilisation du Verifax, précurseur du photocopieur, afin de réaliser ses assemblages et ses collages photographiques, Berman a marqué la scène artistique américaine contemporaine de changements sociaux et sociétaux majeurs durant la seconde moitié du 20ème siècle. Il a notamment été exposé en 2006 et 2008 au Centre Pompidou, ainsi qu’en 2004 au Bronx Museum of Arts et au Whitney Museum of American Art. Ses œuvres sont aujourd’hui présentes dans les collections du Museum of Contemporary Art de Los Angeles ou encore dans les collections du Norton Simon Museum en Californie.
