A timeless Impressionist subject, the female nude featured prominently in Frederick Frieseke's work, both within intimate interior scenes and opulent garden landscapes. Likely painted in France, the present work incorporates the element of still life painting with bold, contrasting patterns and textures, representing Frieseke during his growing experimentation with color and modern composition. A slightly later work from 1909, Nude Seated at Her Dressing Table (Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.) similarly juxtaposes color, texture and pattern.
