Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707-1788) was a French naturalist who published a thirty-six volume treatise examining taxonomy and comparative anatomy in animals and minerals titled Histoire Naturelle, générale et particulière, avec la description du Cabinet du Roi starting in 1749. This was later accompanied by a collection of hand-colored engravings titled Collection des Animaux Quadrupèdes de Buffon, formant 362 planches d'animaux, coloriées, servant à toutes les éditions des Oeuvres de cet auteur circa 1795.
Belgian artist Frédéric Théodore Faber (1782-1844) studied under the prominent Flemish painter of landscapes and animals Paul Balthasar Ommeganck (1755-1826). Faber, also known for his etchings, enjoyed royal favor and patronage from King William I, a fellow protestant, and was known to have completed several orders for the king. In 1824 Faber founded a porcelain manufactory in the town of Ixelles with Charles-Christophe Windisch (d. 1842) with backing from of the King. Faber and Windisch split ways in 1830 after Belgium declared its independence from the Netherlands, though Faber's sons Henri-Emmanuel and Louis-Benoit Édouard took over the manufactory thereafter.
