The present prototype is perhaps the most important single example of the RM036, one of the rarest and most intriguing of Richard Mille’s wristwatches. The property of the original owner who was directly involved in its development, it now offers collectors the once-only chance to obtain the most significant individual specimen of the RM036.
The RM036 Jean Todt limited edition is a hand-wound tourbillon timepiece with a unique patented built-in G-force meter – to measure the force from velocity. A limited edition of 15 examples were made publicly available.
The Richard Mille RM036 ‘G-Sensor Tourbillon’ was created to promote road safety. At the time, Richard Mille decided to develop a watch capable of offering a tangible solution to road safety issues. It also allowed him the opportunity to design and develop another horological first. Richard Mille’s teams worked to develop a mechanism capable of translating the physical constraints felt by the body during rapid decelerations to an indication on a watch dial, thus making drivers aware of the dangers of the road. The tourbillon movement is entirely made of grade 5 titanium and ARCAP with a carbon nanofiber base. The G-Sensor, able to withstand decelerations of several tens of g’s, was developed and patented by Renaud Papi exclusively for Richard Mille. The sensor translates the movement of a small internal mechanism to an indicator, thereby allowing the wearer to visualise the forces. Assembled directly on the baseplate, this extraordinary and complex mechanism was designed to visually display the number of g’s experienced by the wearer during rapid decelerations. Another unique feature of the RM036 is the scale in the upper half of the dial that indicates whether the deceleration is safe (green zone) or critical (red zone) for the driver. The push-piece in the band resets the indicator to zero.
