Richard Mille’s RM018 tourbillon made in homage to Boucheron is a highly significant model in the history of the company. This superb example with movement No. 30 is the final watch of the entire edition of 30 pieces and is specially inscribed for the present owner and dated '25 February 2012'.
The RM018 was in fact the first of Richard Mille’s wristwatches to be fitted with a movement made with sapphire crystal plates, an incredible achievement. In fact, the know-how gained during the production of the RM018 later proved invaluable in the production of the extraordinary crystal watches RM056 and RM56-01.
2008 marked the 150th anniversary of the Parisian jeweller Boucheron and to commemorate this special occasion, Richard Mille produced a very special model, the RM018 in a number of variations. Most notable for its movement which is not only a tourbillon but also has wheels set with natural mineral material. A number of different versions were produced in the limited edition of 30 pieces featuring wheels made of tiger’s-eye, jasper, black onyx, and diamonds which can be seen through the skeletonised dial. The technique that is required to create such a watch involves a high level of mathematical modelling and high-precision in handcrafting its wheels.
As a clear nod to the history of Boucheron, the crown is in the style synonymous with the maison’s haute joaillerie, and the case is deeply engraved with vertical ridges which is reminiscent of the iconic Reflet watch which was introduced by the jeweller in 1947.
The present lot is one of the most glamorous variations of the edition, with the stunning combination of the coloured wheels of the movement, the contrasting white metal case and the whole offset by the subdued black strap. Executed as a pièce unique, this watch represents a rare opportunity to acquire a contemporary creation reflecting the history of two significant brands at the top of their respective industries.
