The present work is one of twelve book illustrations Pissarro created for the Greek writer Longus' Daphnis et Chloé. This project was the suggestion of the artist's son, Lucien Pissarro, who had previously published a portfolio of woodcuts he made after his father's drawings titled Les travaux des champs. The present work illustrates the final scene of the book when Daphnis and Chloé are married. This story would later be adapted into illustrated editions by artists such as Aristide Maillol in 1937 and Marc Chagall in 1977.
