A pair of card tables with very similar marquetry to the present lot was almost certainly supplied by Thomas Chippendale to William Weddell for Newby Hall circa 1775. During the mid-1770s, Chippendale was actively engaged in the extensive Harewood House commission and simultaneously provided furniture to various other patrons in Yorkshire. This included William Weddell at Newby and Daniel Lascelles at Goldsborough Hall. Studley and Newby are neighboring estates, making it highly likely that the Aislabie family, who inherited Studley from the Vyners, were acquainted with the notable new furniture at Newby. It's plausible that they acquired similar pieces for themselves, also commissioning Chippendale.
