Christie’s Geneva is immensely honoured to have the opportunity to present to collectors a superlative stainless steel example of the rare reference 6264, a model only made for 3 years and considered the most beautiful and desirable of the pump-pusher ‘Paul Newman’ Cosmograph Daytonas.
Chosen by the present owner with unerring taste and an eye for rarity and originality, the present watch is offered in excellent overall condition and incredibly, it is accompanied by the original sales receipts of 1973. The original owner purchased the watch from Rolex in Buenos Aires for $4350 dollars on 23rd July 1973 evidently with a discount, as the accompanying Rolex ‘Certificacion de Valor’ dated the next day, 24th July 1973, gives a replacement value of $5'183 dollars. These precious and historic papers are preserved in the original Rolex Buenos Aires envelope. In the world of vintage watches where a Rolex ‘Paul Newman’ Daytona is a must have, this example is a dream.
The stunning three-colour ‘Paul Newman’ dial shows no indication of cosmetic intervention or enhancement, with intact luminous markers and only the slightest of blemishes on the 30-minute register. The dial type is of particular note, called ‘Musketeer’ by collectors, it exhibits the unusual manufacturing variation whereby the concentric circular pattern of the subsidiary dials does not extend to the very edge but instead leaves a wide blank slanting border. The ‘Musketeer’ dial offers the traditional overall effect for the model but at the same time it distinguishes it from standard ‘Paul Newman’ dials with its slight proportional difference.
The case exhibits all the usual signs of honest use over the last 50 years that is so appreciated by collectors today. Not excessively restored or over polished, the correct original type 1 bezel insert matches in condition and serves to enhance the overall original magic.
The Rolex Cosmograph, as every watch lover knows, is one of the most desired of all vintage wristwatches. Of course, among the Cosmograph ‘family’ there are variations in manufacturing details that have resulted in fascinating rarities of which no more than a handful exist. It is these watches, of which the present watch is one, that the world’s most exacting collectors seek to possess. The present reference 6264, in wonderful ‘private collection’ condition and with rare Paul Newman ‘Musketeer’ dial and original receipts is undoubtedly a splendid specimen that will impress the most exacting of collectors.
