The coat-of-arms belongs to James Duncan (1757-1815), of the Duncan family of Galloford, Seaside and Damside, Scotland, a branch of the Lundie family. James, born James Beveridge, adopted the name Duncan in 1798 upon inheriting the estate of his cousin, Patrick Duncan. The arms in pretence belong to his wife, Elizabeth, whom he married in 1785. For a cider-jug and cover painted with the same arms, see the example sold at Christie's, New York, 21 January 1999, lot 257, and illustrated by D.S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p. 1001, no. W4.
