Giovanni Domenico Tiepolo drew several series of drawings which repeat a single theme in many different variations. The present drawing is part of the series representing God the Father in the clouds supported by angels and cherubs. According to the old numbering, which often appears near the top left corner of the sheets, over one hundred drawings were part of this series (J. Byam Shaw, The Drawings of Domenico Tiepolo, London, 1962, p. 32). Among drawings with a similar composition is one at the Art Institute of Chicago (inv. 1926.444; for this and other drawings in the series, see C. Fischer, Venetian Drawings. Italian Drawings in the Royal Collection of Graphic Art, Copenhagen, 2018, p. 239, under no. 163).
