The present work is a mordant commentary on the brutality of war and human suffering in the 20th century. "The Quarantined Citadel is an attack on war through the vehicle of Evergood's best social satire. The artist has banished all the warmonger generals to an island, equipped them with maps, toy soldiers and Coney Island amusement park airplanes, and lets them play out harmlessly their visions of conquest." (American Modernism, exhibition catalogue, Boca Raton, Florida, p. 52)
The present work received a Second Honorable Mention for the artist at the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in 1945.
