Born in 1931, David Driskell grew up in North Carolina and studied art at Howard University, The Catholic University of America and the Institute for the History of Art in The Hague. In addition to being a working artist, Driskell worked as a professor at a number of institutions, including the University of Maryland, College Park, which later founded the David C. Driskell Center to honor his work as an artist, curator and scholar. A champion of African American art, Driskell received National Humanities Medal in 2000 and a Lifetime Legacy Award from the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture in 2016.
