The present watch would appear to be the only FAP reference 6262 with Paul Newman dial known to exist. Its original and superb condition is reflected by the beautifully preserved dial with luminous accents in fine condition. The back is very crisp and engraving clear and sharp. The inside of the back is stamped with the reference number 6239 and the last three digits of the serial number ‘010’.
The present reference 6262 Daytona ‘Paul Newman’ made for the Peruvian Airforce was one of the stars of the now legendary Christie’s 2013 auction 'Rolex Daytona - Lesson One - 50 exceptional examples of the world's most celebrated chronograph wristwatch'. Not only is the reference 6262 one of the scarcest of all non-screw down pusher Paul Newman Daytonas, but the present watch is, to the best of our knowledge, the only publicly known example with this configuration inscribed for the Fuerza Aerea del Perù (FAP).
Rolex has made watches for some organizations, both military (British Forces) and scientific (Comex). Produced in very small numbers, they are now amongst the most collectible of vintage Rolex. Seen very rarely are watches such as the present chronograph which were made for the Fuerza Aerea del Perù (FAP), a branch of the Peruvian military created from the merger of the Peruvian army and navy. Although several Rolex models were supplied, FAP generally favoured the Cosmograph Daytona model. The Rolexes supplied to FAP bear the military designation engraved on the case back.
Certain features distinguish the FAP Daytona from normal production models. For example, the above-mentioned engraving on the outside of the case back together with the engraving of the serial number on the inside which is normally placed between the lugs. This engraving changed with time from only the last three digits of the number (like the present watch) to its entirety in later versions. The Fuerza Aerea del Peru designation is engraved around the edge of the case back by means of a rotary cutter, as can be noted by its depth and smoothness on the inside.
The link between Rolex and the The Fuerza Aérea del Perú (FAP), or Peruvian Air Force is believed to have been forged by the official Rolex dealer of Lima, and Andre Heineger, Head of Rolex South America. Between 1962 and the late 1970s, FAP is thought to have received around 700 watches including Daytonas, Submariners and GMT’s which were intended for high-ranking officials.
