George Harrison and Pattie Boyd
A collection of correspondence, 1964-1974
A significant collection of handwritten correspondence from Pattie Boyd to her mother, during the period of her relationship with George Harrison, 1964-1974, comprising eighteen letters and eight postcards, including two postcards mailed by Pattie during their trip to India with Ravi Shankar, September 1966, one of which was additionally signed in black ink by George and love from George xx, other highlights include:
- a postcard from their holiday in Tahiti and Bora Bora, May 1964, Pattie writes Having a great time. This is the first island we have landed on that sells postcards... We fish quite a lot. George catches fish with a spear gun in the sea;
- a letter from Ovington Mews, n.d. but circa August 1964, on moving into Ovington Mews Mary and I have moved into this fabulous mews cottage, everyone loves it... Poor George went off [on tour] on Tuesday morning and I am very unhappy. Anyway he rang me up last night and I am expecting a phone call tonight..., George's parents are staying at the house in Esher;
- a letter from the Bahamas, December 1964, where they enjoyed a holiday with the Beatles' accountant Dr Walter Strach after setting up a tax haven there, recounting that The press and lots of screaming kids et us at the airport with a spotlight on us as soon as we stepped off the plane;
- a postcard from the Cap Estel Hotel on the French Riviera, August 1965, during their holiday with Brian Epstein Our hotel is the one wit the spot on. It's fabulous... The weather is so hot and the food is great, after which George takes over in his own hand to comment (For those who like French food), and Pattie explains George has a bad tummy at the moment!;
- a letter from Kinfauns, 1966, detailing George's purchases from the Beatles' first visit to India There is a beautiful low round brass table & stools to match, and they are painted reds and blues. Also a 5 foot high tea pot, and lots of wool rugs, and recounting a visit Ravi Shankar (the sitarist) came to play to us last week. It was wonderful. He invited George & I to stay with him in Bombay, so we are going in September, when George gets back from America;
- a letter from Kinfauns, July 1967, with news of an exciting purchase The other day someone showed us a 1928 Rolls Royce and we couldn't resist buying it. It is so beautiful and absolutely enormous after the mini's we've been used to..., and a recent visitor One of the Monkees came here two days ago, he was very nice;
- a letter from Kinfauns, April 1969, during their hunt for a new home Bickleigh Castle was quite good but it is on a road..., The other house was huge, at one time it was a girls school. George loved it but I thought it was too big. Also it's so far from London - especially if George is working;
- a letter from the Nevada desert, n.d. but circa November 1969, following an extended stay in Los Angeles while George worked on the production of Jackie Lomax's album Is This What You Want? at Sound Recorders studio between October and November 1969 for the Apple record label, Pattie writes We are staying in a sweet little house made of wood and stone - its not very warm so we have big log fires going every evening. Mal [Evans] is with George & I at the moment... It's so quiet here compared to where we were staying in L.A. There we had a house with 5 other people staying as well as all their friends and our friends there every day. George has finished his recording with Jackie Lomax - it went o.k.;
- a letter from Warrington, November 1969, with sad news on the failing health of George's mother, and an update on the potential purchase of Friar Park At the moment surveyors are looking a the big house and we will know definitely if we can get it or not at the end of the week;
- a letter from their new home Friar Park, October 1970, exclaiming We are absolutely freezing!!;
- a significant letter from Jamaica, November 1970, with an account of their recent trip to New York We were in New York for just over a week while George made sure his record was cut properly for America before it's put into production. After a bit of trouble it's perfect now, their meeting with Paul and Linda McCartney Paul wanted to see George about leaving the Beatles completely. It was strange to see them there as we haven't seen them for so long, and their stay at Bob Dylan's country house in Woodstock, together with an explanation as to why they did not go to Los Angeles as planned when we arrived in N.Y. the press that met us said if we go to L.A. George could be called up by the defence lawyers in the Charles Manson case to answer questions about Beatles songs influencing Charles Manson;
- another from Friar Park, April 1971, detailing their renovation plans George has decided to have his recording studio upstairs in what was going to be Terry's flat. The only thing is the instruments like organs and pianos will be so awkward to take up;
- a letter from Friar Park, February 1973, following their trip to Skye to visit Donovan We had a good time on Skye - it's very rugged and wild with changing weather every 10 minutes;
- a letter from Beverly Hills, June 1973, while George was producing Ravi Shankar's album Shankar Family & Friends, revealing that George isn't working much at the moment as he's waiting for Ravi to return from his tour so they can continue their album; and
- a letter from The Cosmopolitan hotel, Denver, Colorado, July 1974, after Pattie had left George and joined Eric Clapton on his American tour, informing her mother I'm just having a break from Big G. as things were getting rather out of hand
