Of the present work, Roger Fry has written,

The very slight drawing--pencil with one or two minute washes--shows how [Cézanne] begins by only indicating a few significant parts of a contour. This is partly due to his intense desire to avoid isolating any one part from the whole context. He has to carry on the realization of every part on a level front, so to speak. But the extraordinary thing is to note how complete a conception of the whole space is given here. Here we are almost able to carry on the indications for ourselves, so pregnant are the hints he gives us (op. cit., pp. 64-65).
