The gifted actress Eva Le Gallienne (1899-1991) was a noted figure in the American theatre for several decades. As well, Le Gallienne was a director, producer, teacher and translator of major playwrights such as Ibsen and Chekhov. Her many love affairs included relationships with flamboyant Hollywood actresses Alla Nazimova and Josephine Hutchinson; although scandalous at the time, the actress survived her bad press, in large part due to her great artistic talents. Acclaimed for her great vision, during the Great Depression, President Roosevelt offered her a post as director in the National Theater Division, part of the Works Progress Administration--which she turned down.

Le Gallienne continued to work in the theater and the movies to the end of her days earning both a Tony and an Academy Award nomination. Upon her death-actress Jane Alexander said: "There was nobody else like her; she did it all."
