In the present work, painted in 1958, Lowry has depicted people enjoying a Sunday stroll in the park. The subject matter of people within urban parks was a source of inspiration for a number of Lowry's paintings. Although the people in this painting are clearly enjoying their leisure time in the green open space that this park provides, Lowry has included a background of factory buildings and smoking chimneys which serve as a reminder that people are never able to completely escape from their working lives.

The composition of the present work is arranged on receding horizontal planes which is a typical device used by Lowry. The painting is very close to another work, painted a year later, Sunday in the Park, Manchester (sold in these rooms, 8 June 2007, lot 110, for £180,000). Many of the figures appear in both works including the two strange women who are seated back-to-back on the bench on the right hand side of the painting. They seem to express Lowry's constant fascination with how people can be physically close to each other but remain distinctly distant and alone.
