This brooch was designed by Maurice Duvalet for Van Cleef & Arpels in 1944.

George Balanchine gave this ballerina portrait brooch to his wife Zorina around 1944. A famous Ballet Russe dancer in the 1930's, Vera Zorina made the transition to the popular stage in London, premiering in the 1938 American musical comedy, On Your Toes. Later, the producer Sam Goldwyn cast her in his 1938 film, The Goldwyn Follies. She appeared simultaneously on Broadway in her husband's acclaimed ballets. Zorina later married Goddard Lieberson, president of Columbia Records.
