Calder configured Untitled with deceptively pure geometry. It nevertheless surprises with its disarmingly delicate movements that animate not only the sculpture itself but also the space the sculpture inhabits. By introducing delicate animated movement to sculptural form, Calder subtly changed the very definition of sculpture by exponentially expanding its formal possibilities. Untitled is of its time and represents an important historical moment in the history of sculpture yet enchantingly manages to defy it's age in years retaining an eternal youth through the nature of it's own whimsy and unique personality.
Untitled may resemble a seated woman with a paunch whose curly pony tail fortunately weighs out the bouncing atoms that seem suspended from her forehead. It may resemble a rocket, frozen in time, whose nose physically holds up the barrier it is about to pass through on a journey that will ultimately scatter the molecules that play calmly beside it. This unlikely object takes on the characteristics of familiar objects in the world. It is at once completely unique and lovingly familiar. Untitled enchants and surprises with a freshness and intimacy that little art can maintain over time.
