Christopher Lloyd confirmed the authenticity of this work in 1996.

This drawing is a preparatory study for the seated figure on the right in Pissarro's oil painting Faneuses au repos, 1891 (JP 920; San Antonio, Marion Koogler McNay Art Museum; fig. 1). Another pastel related to the same painting is in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford (Brettell & Lloyd, no. 240).
