Brassaï noted that the face of a hoodlum cut off by the edge of the frame of one of his glass-plate negatives (see fig. for Lot 276) looked like he was peering around the edge of a wall. He isolated those two figures and printed an expanse of exposed paper at the right in order to appear to be a wall in shadow (see fig.). For the present lot Brassaï placed a man in a similar pose next to a real wall.
