The 1815 UP and DOWN model was designed to remember A. Lange's long-standing traditions. The two subsidiary dials, one for the constant seconds and one for the power reserve, are typical features of many historic pocket watches and high precision marine chronometers made by Lange.
Its movement was developed by Lange's engineers who improved a patent granted to Otto Lange in 1940, allowing the integration of a planetary gear system in the tight space between plates of a pocket watch. A miniaturised version of this mechanism is now incorporated in the movement of the 1815 UP and DOWN, meanwhile acclaimed as one of the thinnest mechanical movements with a power reserve indicator. Despite the addition of 46 individual parts, the height of the movement is only marginally larger than the one of its sibling, the Lange 1815.
