Patek Philippe first introduced the reference 5109 in 2003 at the Basel Fair in Switzerland. The case was inspired by the Art Deco designs of wristwatches representative of the 1920s.

A similar model is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches, by O. Patrizzi, Volume 2, p. 307, pl. 1249.
