The "Schiffspokale" or boat-shaped cup had two possible functions. It could be displayed as an ornamental nef following the French court tradition where it would be placed in front of the most important guest. Alternatively, it could be used as a drinking cup fitted with four wheels, like the present example, to allow it to be passed around the table. Two other nefs by Müllner, 1625-1629 are recorded in the collections of the Hermitage, St. Petersburg and the Historical Museum, Bern (see. K. Tebbe, et al, Nürnberger Goldschiedkunst 1541-1868, Nuremberg, 2007, pp. 284-5)
