Saint George was a Roman soldier and early Christian martyr. His identification as dragon slayer is the result of medieval hagiography and was firmly established by Jacobus de Voragine's Legenda Aurea. He is the model of the Christian soldier and was particularly revered during the Crusades. Within Dürer's printed work, he is, of course, a precursor to the knight in Knight, Death and the Devil (lot 21).
