This small, intimate scene is typical of Rembrandt's treatment of scenes involving the resurrected Christ. In contrast to the conspicuously dramatic theatrical compositions illustrating Jesus's life as a man, the treatment here is more atmospheric. Rembrandt executed two etchings of this subject, and in this smaller version he reduced the content to concentrate on the figures as they realise that the man before them is the risen Christ.
