In depicting his subjects, Nakayama utilizes traditional Japanese painting technique of combining delicate lines and layering translucent colours in his portraiture, which fashions an ethereal softness in the facial features of the women. This layering of warm pastel colours create gentle smooth contours with surprising three dimensionality, conveying an overall aura of tenderness and innocence, and inviting the viewer to face and observe her. The viewer is instantaneously mesmerized by the intricate depth of the figure's pupils in Autumn's Holiday (Lot 1637). The vivid descriptive details of the eyes are manifested with diligently ordered lines resulting in an insensate expression, amplified by the glossy shimmering of the pupils as if her eyes held secrets waiting to be discovered. The need to explore the depths of her eyes is prompted by Nakayama's choice to paint a projected mental landscape of female figures rather than a mere objective portrait. By consistently drawing inspiration from his memory, his portraits generate a nostalgic aura, instigating the viewer to conjure up the beauty and personality of the woman as if he or she once knew her and to use his or her imagination to re-create the story behind this painting, thereby delving into the memory banks of the artist.
