The Sibley family enjoyed a long connection with Alexander Calder, dating back to the mid 1930s when they rented a cottage to Calder and his young family in Nauset Harbor on Cape Cod. The resulting friendship lasted for well over a decade, even resulting in a newly rediscovered 1947 Calder mural painted in the family kitchen of Mr. George Sibley's house in nearby Eastham. But perhaps the most exquisite result of this lasting friendship is this exquisite brooch given to Dorothy Sibley, George Sibley's daughter. In May of 1937 Calder and his wife Louisa set sail for Europe onboard the S.S. Lafayette, taking Dorothy Sibley with them to look after their first daughter, Sandra. Dorothy had a wonderful time with the Calders; lunching with the Matisses and sailing around the continent with the family. When she returned home she bought with her a fish pin which Calder had just made for her; a fitting souvenir from her maritime adventure.

The present piece of jewelry represents the very best of Alexander Calder's sculptural marriage of art and life. Whimsically representational, one can just imagine the young artist and new father fashioning a gift for a young woman. Although in time the Calders had more children and the old Sibley's cottage on Nauset Harbor became too small for their vacations, the two families remained good friends, corresponding on occasion and visiting back and forth whenever they were in Eastham. This work has remained a treasure in the family ever since.
