With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch with silvered dial, raised steel indexes and tachymetre scale in 1946 and its subsequent sale on 17 March 1947.
Reference 1463 is Patek Philippe's only vintage chronograph model with screw back case and round pushers. Often worn by their original owners and consequently regularly serviced and polished, many examples of this iconic and noble sports watch have not survived without visible traces of use.
Consequently, references 1463 preserved in such attractive and original overall condition such as the present example are exceedingly rare. Doubtlessly one of the most attractive reference 1463 models to be offered in public in recent years, its desirability resides in the exclusive combination of the stainless steel case and the highly attractive two-tone silvered dial. The case shows beautiful and rich proportions, most obvious are the well-preserved edges of its bezel and lugs. Most notably however is the eye-catching dial, featuring a charismatic two-tone silvered scheme and a lovely cream-coloured patina from age.
Research has furthermore revealed that the present watch is the only example of a reference 1463 in stainless steel with such an attractive two-tone silvered dial and applied Arabic numerals combined with the retailer's signature E. Gübelin to have appeared in public to date.
Not only its dial configuration and lovely original condition elevate this reference 1463 into the elite of this milestone model but also its distinguished provenance. In fact, it has remained for all its life in the original owner's family in Switzerland until 2006 when it was auctioned, in these salerooms, by Christie's Geneva. After four years in one of Europe's finest collections, it is now only for the second time that this exceptionally appealing example is offered at auction.
Reference 1463 was launched in 1940 and remained in production until 1965, the majority cased in yellow gold. The stainless steel models however are exceedingly rare and were in production only until 1960.
The model is illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, p. 267.
