RARE VERTICAL OF MOUTON ROTHSCHILD
CHATEAU MOUTON-ROTHSCHILD

Château Mouton-Rothschild stands alone in its feat of being the only Château of the 1855 Médoc classification to change status. While this classification purported to consider only market prices in its framework, the exclusion of Mouton from the ranks of the four other 1st Growths reeked of bias.

The Château was certainly of high pedigree, making its first appearance in a Christie's catalogue in 1834. When Baron Philippe de Rothschild took the helm in 1922 serious strides were made to improve the quality. The young Baron proposed chteau bottling for all the first growths and for Mouton-Rothschild itself to ensure greater quality control and Mouton was the first to achieve Château bottling of a harvest in 1924.

The Baron diligently worked towards correcting what he called 'the monstrous injustice' of the classification. Overcoming the inertia of a system steeped in tradition, politics and tremendous wealth, Mouton was reclassified from a second to a first growth in 1973 after a 51 year campaign. No other château has been promoted or demoted from the Médoc classification since.

In 1945 Baron Philippe commissioned an artist to create a label for his wine. This tradition continues today and notable artists such as Picasso and Warhol have created labels fit for the château. The labels are highly coveted individually and collectively create a legendary collection that befits the chteau's accession to glory.

Christie's is proud to offer a vertical from Château Mouton Rothschild spanning the years 1943-1985 with the noted addition of the 1928.

The consignor, a long term client and friend of Christie's, has spent many years putting together this rare vertical sourcing from only the best merchants. This was removed from temperature and humidity controlled home storage for this sale.
