James Johnson Sweeney organized the groundbreaking African Negro Art exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1935 consisting of 603 objects drawn from collections all over the world. The museum hired Walker Evans to photograph 477 of the pieces and to produce 17 sets of prints bound in four portfolios. The present lot is one volume of Sweeney's own working set.
