With Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming production of the present watch in 1954 and its subsequent sale on 11 August 1960.
Minute repeating wristwatches are amongst the rarest and most desirable trophies in today's collectors market. Due to the extreme cost of production, only a limited number of such 12 lines movements, supplied by the prestigious ébauche manufacturers Fritz Piguet, were ever made.
Repeating watches, a reminiscence of the past when electric light was not yet available to read the time in the dark, have become the ultimate state of the art device for the demanding connoisseur wishing to enjoy perfect craftsmanship combined with the discreet look of a contemporary wristwatch.
Reference 2524/1, one of the world's rarest wristwatches, was launched in 1955 and made in two versions: one without subsidiary seconds and the repeating activated by pushing downwards, such as the present watch, the second with subsidiary seconds and the repeating slide to be pushed upwards.
In fact, according to research, the present example is one of only four examples of a reference 2524/1 without the subsidiary seconds to have appeared in public to date. Its exclusivity can be compared to other highly desirable complicated wristwatches made by Patek Philippe, such as the celebrated World Time wristwatch with two crowns, reference 2523.
The reference 2524/1 offered here for sale is distinguished by its very good and original overall condition. The case has never been subject to careless polishing and has preserved its full proportions to the best extent, the gold mark underneath the lug is clearly visible. The pure "time only" dial lacking any other indications, notably subsidiary seconds, is distinguished by its great readability. Visibly untouched, it disperses a great shine and impresses with the beautifully raised hard enamel signature.
The two versions of reference 2524/1 illustrated in Patek Philippe Wristwatches by Martin Huber & Alan Banbery, second edition, pp. 318 & 319.
