The Shashka is a specific single-handed, guardless sword, originating from the Caucase. Used mostly by the Cossacks, its slightly curved blade was sometimes applied with inscriptions. The present sword was formerly in the collection of Emperor Soltan Ahmad Shah Qajar (1898-1930), 7th king of the Qajar dynasty. The date on the blade indicates 1326, or 1908-1909 AD, the year of his ascension to the throne. The sword was probably offered to him on this occasion.
