Josef Albers (1888-1976)
Property of the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation, sold to benefit American Friends of Le Kinkeliba American Friends of Le Kinkeliba was created in 2007 by the Albers Foundation to support a French non-profit organization that builds kindergartens and medical centers, and fosters education and cultural enrichment, in an isolated region of rural Senegal. The struggles of the local population to combat poverty and illiteracy and improve their everyday living conditions were issues close to the hearts of Josef and Anni Albers, who experienced great hardship while always treasuring the beautiful possibilities of life. The success of our work to date, as well as urgent needs of the people we serve, has caused us to expand our activities to provide scholarships, pay for medicine for young children who would die without our intervention, obtain healthy water, and assist in a range of other ways. We frequently visit the communities in which we are active, and are in constant contact with our colleagues on the spot to assure that all donations meet their target and have a direct impact. Proceeds of the funds raised by the purchase of this painting will support this life-saving work and help build and maintain two residential studios for visiting artists in Bala, near the border of Mali. At Bala, we are helping create a center that enables mobile medical units to reach smaller villages in one of the hottest and most arid places on the planet. The studios set among baobab trees will enable artists from all over the world to become part of a place where, for all of the hardship, the wonder of everyday life is palpable.
