Troubetzkoy arrived in Milan in 1884, the same year in which Puccini's earliest opera was produced. As young members of Milan's artistic community, Puccini and Troubetzkoy became friends and were both influenced by other poets, writers, musicians and artists who were part of the 'Scapigliati'.
It is believed that Troubetzkoy designed his figure of Puccini around 1912, when he modelled portraits of a variety of musicians. When Puccini died in 1924, Troubetzkoy was commissioned to create a statuette of the composer for La Scala. Troubetzkoy used his likeness from 1912 to create a lifesize commemorative statue that is now located outside the Museo Puccini in Torre del Lago. Bronze figures of Puccini by Troubetzkoy are held in the collections of the Museo Teatrale alla Scala, Milan; Kirov's Museum of Art, Kirov and the San Diego Opera Guild, California (Prince Paul Troubetzkoy: The Belle Epoque Captured in Bronze, exhibition catalogue, Sladmore Gallery, London, May 21-June 27, 2008, no. 18, pp. 52-53, 72).
A similar model of Puccini signed and dated 'Paul Troubetzkoy 1925 12' and '1912B' and stamped 'Milano' was sold Christie's, New York, 24 April 2009, lot 113.
